Faces Inside Photographs

The rusted nail in the battered wall
Holds the crooked frame of the torn picture that won’t fall
We see the clear blue sky and all of the autumn trees
But what the camera’s focused on is really you and me
We sat under the elm and we kissed the day away
We stayed up and watched the sunrise while our thoughts were led astray
That one fleeting moment that we got captured on film
Was a moment that’s a product of what our love willed

All the memories burned into my mind
Were the prelude to a future where your’e always in my sight
Spending all those nights in front of the fireplace
I look up to focus but I get lost in your gaze
And when I fall asleep with you inside my arms
Nothing will break through that shield to cause us harm
And when I realized this is the best thing I’ve ever had
You were tracing the lines of the tattoo on my back

The rusted nail in the battered wall
Holds the crooked frame of the torn picture that won’t fall
Through every clear blue sky and every autumn tree
The camera’s always been focused on you and me
With every time we sleep and every time we dance
Every time we wrestle in the grass
And with every smile and every laugh
We become the faces inside the photographs

If there ever was a reason not to write love songs specifically for or about one person, this, along with I’m Not Alone would be prime examples. Largely based on a dream I had one night (from what I remember), I took the bassline that was used for For Now, For Always and put it together with these lyrics. As much as I enjoy the imagery in the song, it wouldn’t be a song I could bring myself to present to a band. I won’t lie, the bassline used for this song (and previously with For Now, For Always) and the melody for the lyrics are easily among the favorite I’ve come up with, so I wouldnt put it past me to recycle those again and rewrite the lyrics from scratch.
